From beet fields
to open range

Rocking AK Ranch began with a man willing to start again.

After the First World War, Alois Kappes left the Rhine-Westphalian region of Germany, in the area now known as North Rhine-Westphalia, and came to America. He knew the discipline of farming and the value of good ground. Outside Fort Collins, Colorado, he put that knowledge to work growing sugar beets.

The crop had helped build northern Colorado, but the prosperity did not hold. The postwar sugar market broke sharply in 1920. Prices fell, refiners pressed growers for lower contracts, and independent farmers carried the risk. When beet farming could no longer offer a durable future, Alois looked south.

In 1924, he settled in Alamosa County on the high floor of the San Luis Valley and established Rocking AK Ranch. The landscape was bigger, the weather harder, and the opportunity honest. With a small herd of Herefords, he began building again.

The founding discipline

Good cattle are built one decision at a time.

Alois approached ranching as he had approached farming: observe closely, keep careful standards, and never confuse luck with husbandry. Through deliberate breeding and disciplined herd management, the early Herefords became the foundation of a premium beef herd.

That practical standard outlived its founder. Each generation inherited more than cattle and ground. It inherited a way of paying attention.
